I am baby crazy. I absolutely love babies!I never planned on having just one baby and I miss those first few years with my son. Time and time again, God has reminded me that it’s not my plan we’re folllowing, and so I’m content having an only child and a naughty dachshund. The pup and I watched out the window, one morning this week, as the boy got into the morning carpool. I was literally in awe of how fast he has grown, and reminded myself how blessed I am to watch him grow.
This past weekend I made five dozen cupcakes for a baby shower. The mom-to-be is having a boy and wanted to keep things simple. Lucky for her, she’s having a boy because as I’ve watched all of my girlfriends parent their girls, I do believe boys are much simpler. To keep it simple, we decided on making cute baby faces. I added in a few dozen baby blue cupcakes for variety. Baby blue and brown are such a great color combo. I thought the edible candy pearls on top made these pretty blue cupcakes simply elegant.
The baby faces took a couple of steps, but came together pretty easily. A few tips…
- When you make these cupcakes, do not overfill, about halfway is fine. You want them to be flat. If they puff up after being baked, use a serrated knife to cut off the top.
- To color frosting skin color, add a touch of copper gel coloring. Wilton makes one that Michael’s carries. Start out with just a tad, you can always add more if need be.
- The hair and smiles were made with melted chocolate. I piped a whole bunch on waxed paper on a cookie sheet. Just use a ziploc and cut the tip off. These are very fragile, which I why I recommend making a whole bunch. Put the cookie sheet in the fridge for about ten minutes and they will be ready to add to the cupcakes.
- I used mini chocolate chips, inserted them upside down for the eyes.
- The cheeks were made with those little dot candies on the sheet that we used too get as kids.
When those ran out, I used my hot pink icing gel to tint a 1/4 cup of buttercream and piped the cheeks – both ways turned out cute. - The noses were piped with a Ziploc using the skin colored buttercream. If the dots come out with too much of a point, swipe a toothpick across and the point should come right off.

Those little baby faces are adorable. Wish I had seen this before I made the 75 cuppys for dau’s baby shower. Cute! Cute!! Cute!!
Those baby faces are ridiculously cute! That curl is just the cutest touch. And I think you’re right — boys are easier and then they get cute cupcakes. Not fair!
Oh, these are SO adorable!
I never planned on having “just one,” either, but I love this one I got!

I love these cupcakes. I am doing a cake for my best friend who is due in a month with a little boy. What type of icing did you use for the blue cupcakes?? How did you make it so fluffy and nice…mine is always so blah when I put it on with a knife! Thank you!!!
Hi Alyson! I use this buttercream recipe for the cupcakes. It tastes similar to the icing the grocery bakeries use. Whip it up with the mixer to make it fluffy, and then I pipe my cupcakes with the 1M Wilton tip. Have fun making the cake for your BFF. I’m sure she’ll love it!!
