Blueberry Banana Smoothie for Healthy Hour

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. Our Christmas started with present opening and brunch at my house. Several dinners, brunches, and Happy Hours later, my Christmas is now officially over. It was a great time spent with many of the special people in my life.

Now, if you came here today expecting a cocktail, my sincere apologies. It is Monday and you probably know by now that I always have happy hour on Monday afternoons. I promise not to disappoint this week. I have come up with a couple of great New Year’s cocktails which I’ll share tomorrow. Today, however, is about detox…detoxing from all of the junk I’ve eaten over the holidays. My mom has assured me that the additional five pounds that showed up on my scale yesterday is just water weight, but I’m not convinced. Since I want to end the year on a healthy note, I’ve decided to forego “Happy Hour” today and replace it with “Healthy Hour”. I know, you’re probably thinking that a blueberry banana smoothie just doesn’t sound as fun as a cocktail. I have to agree, but if you put it in a pretty glass you just might fool yourself.

I’m a big follower of Dr. Pratt, who has written several books about Super foods, and whenever I stray too far from the healthy stuff, I refer back to his research and am motivated to get back on track. Everything in this smoothie promotes better health. The blueberries contain more disease-fighting antioxidants than any other fruit. The yogurt is loaded with billions of probiotics and the banana is a great source of potassium.  Even the honey used to sweeten it up promotes antioxidants.

Blueberry Banana Smoothie

1 c. blueberries (frozen or fresh)

1 banana, peeled and sliced

1 c. nonfat plain yogurt

1 tbsp. honey

dash of milk

1 c. ice

Add a spoonful of flax seed or wheat germ for an even healthier treat.

Put all of the ingredients in a blender. Blend at high speed until smooth.
