It’s Favorite Foodie Friday… Halloween Edition

T.G.I.F. everyone! It’s time to hurry up and get in Halloween party mode (if you haven’t already). I’m going to an all-out Halloween bash, (adults only) on Saturday night… These are crazy, fun grown-ups who like to dress up and be kids for awhile. I can’t wait. My costume is neon pink, black, and extra sweet. I’ll share it next week.

I love seeing Halloween ideas from other food bloggers. This year I found a few totally original ideas from a few of my favorite blogs. I was so excited, I had to share them with you.

Credit goes to the creative baker’s behind the scenes at Wilton. Don’t you love all of their fun, holiday ideas? How cool is this cheesecake… when you slice it, each guest gets a sweet super-sized candy corn piece.

I have to say I am not into vampires and eyeballs, and creepy things. There’s a reason we say, “Happy Halloween”. It’s supposed to be a happy holiday. Skeletons have always been on my creepy list, until now! Do you know why these skeletons are so happy? Because they’re made with chocolate-covered pretzels. Go check out the step by step tutorial for these on one of my favorite blogs, Cookies and Cups.

I’ve seen a ton of ways to make Halloween cupcakes ~ ghosts, pumpkins, monsters, etc. They’ll all pretty cute, but these cupcakes caught my eye. Cauldron Cupcakes… who would have thought? Meg of Mega-Crafty (love the play on words) is the baker behind these cupcakes.

I’m kind of a chocolate strawberry connissuer. There are so many ways to decorate and flavor them. Raychel of My Creative Way created these clever Frankenstein strawberries. She also created a bat, a mummy, and a pumpkin in strawberry form. You have to check them out.

In addition to strawberries, I have a thing for chocolcate-covered Oreos. They’re an impressive treat, but most of the work is already done before you even start. You just need to dip them in chocolate and decorate. These adorable mummy Oreo pops were created by Shelley at HowDoesShe.com . This blog has a wealth of information from cooking to organizing to keeping that spark alive with your honey. It’s one stop blogging!

Finally, I leave you with this surprise jack-o-lantern cake. Seriously , there’s a surprise baked right into it. Any guesses? Oh, you want me to tell you what’s inside? Go check out Amanda of I Am Baker’s blog post. She’s provides a detailed picture tutorial on how to make this. She is ridiculously creative and talented (but I think you’ll see that when you see what she made).

I hope you’re inspired! I know I am!

Happy Weekend!

A Favorite Cake Designing Foodie… Pink Little Cake

I’m super excited to share with you one of my favorite blogs, Pink Little Cake. I think I first navigated to the site because of the name ~ Pink Little Cake… It was the pink that grabbed my attention (well, the cake part too). Pink Little Cake belongs to Kathia from New Jersey.  She has one kiddo and a pup (sound familiar? okay not the New Jersey part). I have a list of blogs that I follow for great baking  ideas. There are a few blogs on my list that I’ve grown attached to. Those are the blogs in which the voice of the writer comes across so well, that you not only read follow for great ideas, but also because you’ve made a connection with the writer. This blog is much more than articles on the screen.  Kathia’s family is her number one priority, and her love of life comes through in her baking creations. She also happens to be the most humble blogger I know. One of the tag lines on her blog says “Pretending to be a cake designer one cake at a time.”. There is no pretending. She is amazing. Her creations are true works of art.

Take this, for example… That adorable shoe below, she created out of gumpaste. But you have to check out the shoe box cake that went with it. (This clearly is not someone pretending to be a cake designer.) This is why I wasn’t a bit surprised when the TLC network asked her if she would consider being part of their “Cake Crew”.

Guess what happens when your mom is a cake designer? You get this for your birthday party. How cute is that? Cakes aren’t the only thing she’s an expert in, she designed a whole dessert bar that coordinated with her daughter’s Minnie Mouse cake.  Click here for all of the details.

Oh, I didn’t mention she’s also a cookie designer (which goes far beyond being just a cookie decorator). Look how beautiful these are.

Kathia has just kicked-off  a blogging series that will take us right up until Halloween, called, “28 Days of Sweet Halloween Ideas”. She’s invited 28 bloggers to guest post and share a sweet Halloween treat with her readers. I was flattered and excited when she asked if I’d post on her site (wouldn’t you be?) I’ll be posting over there the first week of October. Be sure to bookmark Pink Little Cake so you can follow along.

Happy Friday! Have a fabulous first weekend of fall!

Another Favorite Foodie Friday… Baking Bites!

This week’s Friday Foodie is a REAL baker, not just a wanna-be baker like me. Nicole Weston’s blog Baking Bites is one of the first blogs I got hooked on. She posts every day, or close to it, which means there is always something new when you visit.

This is a blog you stop by to learn about baking. Nicole explains the intricacies of baking in short, understandable snippets. Many of us can follow a recipe pretty well, but can we thoroughly explain what glueten is, or the differences between sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk, or do you know if ultra pasteurized mean it’s better?

Baking Bites is also the site to go to to find out the latest baking products on the market, and if they’re worth investing in. But you’re also going to find a ton of recipes on the blog… fabulous recipes… original recipes. See, a true baker can create an original recipe that goes beyond, “adapted by” or “inspired by”.

In the mood for girl scout cookies? Guess what, Nicole created recipes to make our favorite Girl Scout cookies homemade for the eleven months they’re not available (and they’re a heck of a lot cheaper too). And I couldn’t talk about Baking Bites without sharing my favorite recipe… the best blueberry bar in the world ~ far superior to the Starbucks version, they’re heavenly!

Seeing how it’s mid-September, I’m ready to break out the pumpkin puree and begin my fall pumpkin recipe marathon. I get a little compulsive with the pumpkin. A quick search for “pumpkin” on Baking Bites and look what I found…YUM!!

Pumpkin Spice Granola

Pumpkin & Chocolate Layer Cake

Pumpkin Pie Cupcakes

Pumpkin Muffins With Milk Chocolate Chips

Oh, and by the way, for all of you cookbook lovers, Nicole has a published cook book that you can buy, the  Baking Bites Cook Book. It would make a great gift for a wanna-be baker, or an expert.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Favorite Foodie Fridays… Sweetopia Proves Baking is an Artform!

If you haven’t visited the blog Sweetopia, it’s a must bookmark. Marian is an amazing artist. Her canvas is sugar. I have learned so much from reading her blog and always leave her site inspired.  She shares amazing tutorials including what to do when air bubbles pop up in your royal icing, how to make gum paste flowers, and how to create a marbleized design on sugar cookies. Look at her beautiful cookies below. She walks you through step by step how to achieve this look, and will make you feel like you can attempt it.

Marian also has this amazing projector called the Kopykake. She has developed a great tutorial showing exactly how it works. When you see what she has made with it, you’re going to hope that the baking fairy makes one appear in your kitchen. Her frog prince cookies are one of my favorite cookies that she’s shared on her blog.

And you have to remember to visit Sweetopia around the holidays. Marian’s gingerbread creations will get you in the holiday spirit. After I designed the gingerbread dog house last year for the Discovery Science gingerbread competition, my appreciation for all of the little details Marian adds to her houses went off the charts. See this amazing house below… Marian even designed the inside of the house. Go see her beautiful pictures here.

Spend some time searching Sweetopia. You can’t help but be inspired!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Favorite Foodie Fridays… Rare Bird Finds

Okay, here I go breaking the rules already. Technically, this one is not a “foodie” site, but if you’re a crazy online shopper, like me, who loves food and unique gifts, you’ll enjoy this one. I visit this blog regularly for gift ideas and for pure entertainment. Rare Bird Finds posts products you’ve probably never heard of, and there is something new almost every day. They are wacky. They are cool, and they just might make you laugh.

I love giving gifts, and spend way too much time trying to find the perfect gift to match each person’s style and interests. I just think if you’re going to give a gift, put a little thought into it. Have you ever had a gift that you gave to someone, regifted back to you, by that same person? It happened to me by an ex-in law (who shall remain nameless). Who does that? I also received used lingerie at my bridal shower from someone in the same family, and don’t even ask me to elaborate on that one. I couldn’t bear to relive that moment. That happened over fifteen years ago, and I’m finally getting over it.

But since I know you would never regift or wrap up your very worn nightie for a birthday gift, here are a few things you’ll see when you stop by Rare Finds…

Every candy bar flavor in this retro candy bar set sounds great to me…

This egg gadget would make beating eggs much more entertaining.

The ketchup Count cap would definitely entertain my boy (might result in a lot of wasted ketchup, but it would be worth it to see the blood dripping out of the vampire’s mouth.

and if you have a four-legged foodie who eats way too fast, you might be interested in the “Eat Slow” bowl.

Go check out Rare Bird Finds and let me know if you find the

 perfect gift for someone.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Favorite Foodie Friday… Bakeat350

I’ve got one of my favorites of all favorites to tell you about this week… Bakeat350.The blogger behind Bakeat350 is Bridget from Texas. Her genuine warmth travels through cyberspace right to your computer. I don’t know how she does it, but it’s true. This is where I go for cookie inspiration! I’m always in awe of what she creates, and have learned a ton from her.

Bridget is a naturally gifted teacher, who loves to share her knowledge and original baking ideas through her blog. You will absolutely love the step by step photo tutorials she creates. She visually breaks the baking process into manageable steps. She would be dynamite in a classroom, but that wouldn’t leave her much time to blog (so don’t go getting your teaching credential any time soon Bridget! We need you in the blogosphere!).

If you want to try designing your own sugar cookies, Bakeat350 is the place to start. And if you’ve been decorating cookies for years, this is where to go for new ideas and inspiration.  Bridget also makes a ton of other sweet recipes.

 Bridget is as….

and so are her cookies. (Don’t you love these? She shows you how to make these adorable cookies right down to the little, blue button.)

She’s not just a cookie lover… she enjoys an adult beverage now and then.

Oh how I love these beer sugar cookies. I just wish Bridget lived closer so we could chat about cookies over happy hour!

And did I mention she recently started her own university and recruited a few fabulous mentors. Go check it out.

Enjoy the beautiful weekend!

Favorite Foodie Friday… Week One Confessions of a Cookbook Queen

When I started my obsession with food blogs a few years ago, there were just a handful of food blogging sites that I visited regularly.  It didn’t take long to discover that the food blogosphere can be a bit overwhelming once you dive in. There are bloggers that I’ve followed, either for their fabulous recipes and ideas, amazing photos, tips and tutorials, or their personal writing styles. But every once in awhile, when I come across a food blog that has all of the above, it earns “Favorite Foodie” status in my book.

I could rattle off a whole bunch of my favorites right here, many of which can be found on my link love page, but a list of links really won’t allow you to get to know any of these bloggers. Instead, each Friday I’m going to share one of my favorite food bloggers with you. I have a feeling, you’re going to love them as much as  I do.

First up, is the blogger behind Confessions of a Cookbook Queen, Kristan from Arkansas. I think it’s a possibility that we were twins separated at birth, except she’s a lot funnier than I am. She’s not just funny, the girl is hilarious! Her anecdotals, stories about being a mom, and her fabulous fun treat ideas keep me stalking her site daily. One of the best parts about blogging is getting to make friends with people all over the world that have similar interests. The bummer is when you find people you’d actually love to hang out with, but find out there’s several thousands of miles between you. I’ve told Kristan that if she ever gets back to visit California, we will plan a day of reality trash t.v. and I will personally take her on a house tour of the Real Housewives of the OC. And if I’m lucky, she’ll show me how to make one of her amazing creations.

When you visit her site, I guarantee you’re going to want to make these…

Rice Krispie Ice Cream Cones ~ These are filled with candy and are perfect party favors. That’s not ice cream on top, but rice krispie treats. You will earn favorite mom status if you make these for your kiddos and their friends. Kristan shows you how and always posts lots of great photos, along with her recipes.

and after you’ve made those, then you’ll want to make the cutest brownie bites ever…

and when you come across these lipstick cookies, you’ll be so impressed, you’ll have to find out how in the heck she made them. Have you ever seen anything like these? These would be perfect for a girl’s night, or for a little girl’s dress up party.

I could go on and on about her soda cupcakes, chocolate covered potato chips, and homeade Twinkies, but I’d be barely scratching the surface of her creativity. Go stop by Confessions of a Cookbook Queen to meet Kristan,  and you’ll see why I’m hooked!

Have a great weekend everyone!
