Alice in Wonderland Cookies… Cookie Templates to the Rescue!

About a month ago, Sabrina emailed me asking if I could make 45 cookie favors for her sister’s baby shower. I thought her Alice in Wonderland theme was fabulous, and couldn’t wait to start on these. We came up with four different cookie designs that tied in with the story. The pocket watch was made using an ornament cookie cutter. I created templates out of card-stock to make the Mad Hatter’s hat and the Cheshire Cat.

Cutting out cookies from a template can be tricky. Maybe tricky isn’t the right word, but it is definitely more time-consuming. If you don’t want to invest in a particular cookie cutter, making your own template is a great alternative. The first step is to find an image from which to create your template. I started by googling “Cheshire Cat printable”. I then found the image I wanted to use here. The next step is to save the image and crop it in Photoshop. I just wanted the face, so I cropped out the rest of the image. Then, re-size it based on how big you want the cookie to be. Finally, cut out the image and trace it onto plain card-stock. Once your dough is rolled out, place the template on top and carefully cut around it. I’ve found that dipping a sharp knife into flour, throughout the process, helps make cleaner cuts. Once your cookies have cooled, take the knife and trim up any jagged edges.

These looked super cute all wrapped up with a yellow gingham ribbon. Sabrina put a cookie favor at each place setting before her guests arrived. She said everyone loved them and commented that they tasted great. To me, the taste is the most important thing. I don’t care how cute your cookie is, if it doesn’t taste good, there’s no point in me wasting the calories. Come on, it’s bathing suit season!

Hope your weekend is full of sunshine!

Not so Angry Bird Brownie Pops… Birthday Party Wrap-up!

Here’s a quick wrap-up of the boy’s birthday party. In addition to the cake and cupcakes, the boy and I wanted to have some other dessert options for the kids to choose from. We decided to make Angry Bird  brownie pops to tie in with the video-game theme. If you haven’t heard of Angry Birds, it’s a game app that has a huge cult following of kids and adults. When it comes to cake pops vs. brownie pops, brownie pops seem to be the winner at our functions. There are people who absolutely love cake pops, but an equal number of people who don’t like the texture of them. There are also kids who don’t eat cupcakes (which I don’t understand at all), so brownie pops makes a good alternative.

For the angry birds, I fortunately had every color of candy melt on-hand. If you don’t want to buy all of the colors pre-made, you can buy the white candy melts and a package of Wilton candy coloring. Do not use Wilton or Americolor’s regular decorating gels. I’ve gotten away with a drop or two, but too much and the chocolate will seize. We used candy-coated sunflower seeds for the beaks and feathers. The top of the black and red birds were made by dipping a snippet of licorice into the melted candy coating mixture. I didn’t realize until mid-party that the angry birds looked quite happy. These were made the hour before the party (which I don’t recommend). The eyebrows, which they lacked, are needed for that angry expression, but who wants anger at a birthday party anyway, right?

The Pac Man cookies were made for me. I was willing to share them, but the boy didn’t appreciate them as much as the girl who grew up in the 80’s, so I claimed them as my own. One thing you don’t know about me is that I am the Ms. Pac Man, Frogger, and Centipede champion of the 80’s (among my friends, of course ~ no national rankings or titles). I’ve always been a little obsessed with Ms. PacMan. I think it’s the love story between Pac Man and Ms. Pac Man that drew me in. The cookie ghosts were made using a mini tulip cookie cutter. Pac Man and his girlfriend were made by using a small circle cookie cutter and the pointy part of a mini heart cookie cutter to take out a piece for the mouth. The eyes on the ghosts are royal icing eyes that I buy pre-made. They come in a whole variety of sizes, and they’re great to use on pops and sugar cookies.

As if there wasn’t enough junk served at the party, we sent each kid home with a wii-mote sugar cookie favor. I’ve done these before and previously piped all of the details (which takes forever!). This time around I used the edible markers and drew in the details. This was a huge time-saver. I do like the look of the intricate piping better, so I’ll continue to do that for cookie orders.

The boy is a bit obsessed with an app. on his itouch called Cut the Rope. It features a little green candy-lovin’ creature who goes through a series of levels to earn lollipops and other treats. We made the monster out of green fondant and added Twizzlers and lollipops to a clear vase. The kids loved these mini-lollipops, and snacked on the licorice throughout the party.

Finally, there was a pizza-lovin’ creature at the party who hit the jackpot. I have no idea if there was pizza in the box when she discovered it or not. Really, I don’t want to know.  I am told that the Naughty One, like the cupcake-hoarding boy from the party (described a few posts back), enjoyed quite a bit of party food that night. Thankfully, like the cupcake hoarder, she never got sick! The Naughty One, not the boy, is my party-animal!

Video Game Themed Party to Celebrate a Decade

My boy turned ten yesterday. I can’t believe we’ve arrived at the double digits.

This year the boy wanted a party. Mind you, this is the boy who hasn’t had a birthday party since kindergarten. He isn’t a huge fan of large celebrations. It remains a genetic mystery how he didn’t inherit the dominant party gene from my side of the family. My niece, who also just celebrated a birthday, clearly inherited the party gene.

Maybe because I was caught off guard that he was asking to have a party, he was somehow able to convince me to let him invite his entire class, all of the boys on the baseball team, and the rest of his best buddies that he hangs out. It was awesome seeing how excited he was for the big event. He checked my Evite account several times a day to see who RSVP’d. Maybe our party-lovin’ ways are wearing off on him!

The boy decided on a video game themed party, so we went big and rented a video game truck. (When I say big, what I mean is that I had to spend my life savings plus his college savings to support this endeavor). And let me tell you… It was completely worth it! Have you seen these game trucks? Sixteen kids sit in front of four flat screen tv’s and get to play their favorite games for two hours. In addition to the games, lights are flashing, and music is blaring. This particular game truck had an open-air stage at the back of the truck for the kids to play Rock Band. This is what heaven looks like in a boy’s world. If you are over eighteen, be warned, it’s like being on the tea cups at Disneyland, you walk out of there with motion sickness wondering how the heck the kids aren’t phased by the sensory overload.

The boy had presents galore to open afterward, but I’d have to say by the look on his face, the best gift was having his parents planning it with him every step of the way. We’ve worked hard to do this and still continue to defy the divorced family stereotypes. It’s not without its challenges. We’re certainly not perfect. Matt’s girlfriend and I had a falling out about a year ago, but in spite of the challenges that come our way, we remain committed to having the best relationship we can for our son.

Here’s a sneak peek at the yummy video-game inspired treats we served. It was a bit of video game & sugar overload… personally, I loved it! This week, I’ll put up a few posts, highlighting a few of the things we made, with a few tips. There were of course, cookie favors to take home (pics. still to come). It was a whirlwind of a birthday weekend, but you only turn ten once in your life, so you gotta go big!

Wedding Dress Cookies

These are a few of the wedding dress cookies that were ordered for a bridal shower on Saturday. I made each dress a little different. I love how they turned out! (I’m hoping the bride-to-be will too!) One of the bride’s accent wedding colors is peach, so the ladies hosting the shower asked me to include a little peach on the cookie design.

Even post-divorce, I still have a thing for weddings. I love the idea of two people, completely in love, committing to share their lives together (hope-ful romantic, I know!). I don’t believe there’s just one person out there for everyone, but I think when you find “the one” you’re meant to be with, it’s an intense connection you’ve never felt with anyone else. (This is what I’d like to believe.)

The boy has recently developed a list of “rules” about who I “can” marry. He has a list of rules for his dad too, but I don’t think he shares those as freely with him. The boy is wise beyond his years, and I think in the end he would like both of his parents to find people who truly make us happy, and not settle for anything less. This week, the boy informed me that it doesn’t matter to him if I get married in the next three years. Regardless, he would like one of three things… another wiener dog, a pool, or a disco ball (I have no idea where in the world the disco ball came from, but I’m LIKING it! Not exactly sure where to buy one, or who to get to install it, but he’s graciously given me three years to make it happen.

I will say this… I had a fabulous wedding. It was the biggest party I ever planned, and the most fun wedding I’ve ever attended. However, if I do remarry I can guarantee a few things will be different…

  1. The focus will be less about the BIG day, and more about the rest of my life.
  2. I WILL NOT enter my reception with “Here’s to you Mrs. Robinson” blaring in the background.
  3. In order to get on the invite list, you must know my middle name, favorite kind of cookie, and the real name of my naughty dachshund. Being introduced to a whole bunch of guests at your wedding who you’ve never met before is a bit strange.
  4. I will eat a piece of my wedding cake (possibly two). Missing out on a piece of my own wedding cake was a tragedy!!
  5. Finally, I’d like to think the next time will be forever!

Spring Cookies

Hope you had a great weekend! It seems the only baking I’ve been able to fit in over the last few weeks has been for orders. I’m not complaining! I love it and it’s a great form of calorie control for me. The first order was for Laura who ordered cookies for her niece’s preschool class to celebrate her third birthday. Is that a great Aunt or what? Hailey loves animals, so we picked a few spring animals that had enough room for me to pipe her name on.  Laura asked if I would do an extra special cookie for Hailey that looked like her favorite blankie ~ chocolate brown with light pink polka dots. The little horse didn’t leave me enough room to pipe the letters, so I added a cupcake cookie to the birthday girl’s bag.

The second order was for Nancy who was going on a quilting retreat and wanted to bring some treats along. Originally, she asked if I had a sewing machine cookie cutter. When she told me what the occasion was, I had the perfect cookie in mind.  Pam’s blog Crazie Cookie is a blog I link to and visit regularly. She is a master cookie decorator and definitely a baking inspiration. You have to go see what she’s created for yourself! One of my favorite cookies she makes are quilt cookie squares. I decided to make these for Nancy in spring colors, and loved how they turned out. Thanks for the inspiration Pam!

Wishing you a great week ahead! I’ll be back to post this week and share a quick treat that will satisfy your chocolate craving!

Catching up on Cookies!

I didn’t take any orders over my busy work season. I knew that would put me over the edge. Last week was the first week I scheduled anything. I ended up with three different orders. Between working and baking, I couldn’t squeeze in blogging. I was happy with how everything turned out and it was nice to hear the hum of my KitchenAid again. I’m crossing my fingers that things slow down, so that I can get back to posting regularly.

Here’s what kept me busy last week…

I loved making these cupcake cookies for Luc’s birthday (pronounced Luke’s). The first birthday is such a huge milestone not just for the baby, but for the parents. It means you survived infancy ~ all of those sleepless nights, crying spells, diapers… you did it! This little guy was having a big celebration with over forty guests. Luc’s mom gave me free reign. She wasn’t doing a specific theme for the party and didn’t have specific colors or a shape in mind. FYI, if you’re going to give me free reign, know that there’s a strong possibility you’ll end up with polka dots. I have a polka dot fetish, and I know a few of you do too.

To get the polka dots on the cupcake liner flush with the background icing, you pipe the dots before the royal icing hardens. The raised sprinkles on top of the cupcake were made once the white royal icing had completely dried.

These onesie cookies were for a baby shower. I have to say I wasn’t a big fan of brown icing, until my mom planted a little idea in my head. She suggested I flavor the icing. I experimented a little and ended up adding a tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder to the royal icing ingredients. I added a little more water, until I reached the right consistency. The icing had a nice chocolately flavor, but still hardened and flooded nicely. I’ll definitely be making chocolate royal icing again.

Midweek, my girlfriend and neighbor, Erika asked if I had time to do cookies for her daughter’s movie-themed party. I had left over dough and royal icing from the previous orders, so it was perfect timing. The kids went to see the movie Rango, so the birthday girl decided a lizard green movie ticket cookie was the perfect choice. I don’t have a movie ticket cutter, but these were pretty simple. I made a rectangle template out of cardstock and cut the cookies out with a sharp knife. Then, using a small egg cookie cutter made the indentations on the sides (photo on the right). I used a flash so the pictures are not the best quality. I still have yet to master the art of taking pictures of cookies in cellophane bags. If you know any secrets, I’d love to hear them.

I promise, cross my heart,  I will post again this week. Wishing you a happy week!

Tammy’s Born to be Wild Baby Shower

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend. This coming Saturday will be my final testing day of the school year. I’ve been to about forty schools and tested over 1,000 kids over the past couple of months. Whose idea was that to send me to all of these schools? Oh, that was my brilliant plan. In addition, to the big Saturday testing events, this year I ventured out to the sites to work one-on-one with kids (self-inflicted craziness). I’m exhausted, yet invigorated. Being on school campuses, making connections with the kids is why I went into education.

The insane craziness is wrapping up, and life will soon go back to the level of craziness that I enjoy. I know, it’s taken me awhile to post these photos from my girlfriend, Tammy’s baby shower. Tammy is my friend that has a million or so friends on Facebook. She is fun and outgoing and a little bit wild. She is a great person, and I’m so happy for her that this new little one is coming into her life. I remembered reading about a “Born to be Wild” themed baby shower on Hostess With the Mostess and thought that was the perfect theme to celebrate her son’s arrival. (The picture on the right is of the two Tammy’s in our group of friends.)

Fifty of Tammy’s friends came over to my house for lunch. Thanks to my partner-in-crime, and best girlfriend, Jen, all went smoothly! Jen’s on the left serving lemonade & iced tea cocktails. She and I both are big fans of Happy Hour, any hour! The color scheme was turquoise, white, and black, with zebra prints mixed in. We had black, turquoise, and zebra printed balloons throughout, and I put together simple white floral arrangements with roses and daisies. Jen and I created an adorable “Born to be Wild” banner with her Cricut. I’m now pining for a Cricut. I love that little machine!  After going through my pictures, I realized I never took one of the banner… so, so sad! You’ll just have to trust me, it was adorable and as soon as I get my Cricut, I’m going to be a banner queen.

Kristy, of Posh Pixels, is an amazing graphic designer. She’s been featured on Hostess With the Mostess, Amy Atlas’ blog, Living Locurto, and a bunch more of the best entertaining blogs out there. Check out her Etsy store and you’ll see what I mean! (Note: Etsy says her online store is closed for a short time, so make sure you check her website above if you click over to Etsy and it’s closed.) Kristy worked with me to customize the turquoise zebra and polka-dotted cupcake toppers. I love the personalization, “Tammy’s Shower”, “Due March 2011”, and “Oh Baby!”.

For dessert, I made chocolate cupcakes in zebra cupcake liners. I tinted the frosting with a little of Americolor’s, turquoise (didn’t want the frosting to come out too dark). I used Wilton’s 2D tip. I love the ruffle texture you can pipe with it.

I also made up a platter of chocolate-covered strawberries drizzled in dark chocolate. I usually buy Wilton’s candy melts from Michael’s. The white is not a true white, more of an off-white.  I ordered Mercken’s Super White candy melts just to compare. They taste the same, so it’s really all about the color you’re going for. For a truly white color, opt for Mercken’s

The cookie favors turned out super cute. I have a polka-dot fetish and couldn’t resist mixing polka dots with the zebra design. Look, I even found coordinating ribbon at Michael’s. I love it when it when a theme comes together! Monogrammed cookies are one of my favorite designs. They add a personal touch for the ones you are celebrating. The J is for Jace, Tammy’s baby’s name. The J’s were made by melting black candy melts, and piping the J’s onto waxed paper, and sprinkling with black sanding sugar before the chocolate set.

Wishing you a wonderful week!

Popcorn Cookies for a Movie Party

Imagine taking fourteen kindergarteners to a movie, fourteen sugared-up kids to a movie that is. I’m a teacher, trained in classroom management skills, and that scenario is even a bit overwhelming to me. This was how my friends celebrated their daughter’s sixth birthday a few weeks ago. She asked if she could take her friends to see the new movie Megamind. I think her parents expected a few of the kiddos wouldn’t be able to attend, but everyone said yes. If you ask me, they’re pretty cool parents. After the movie, everyone was invited back to the house for dinner, cake, and more crazy fun… which makes them even cooler (or crazier depending on your perspective). Mackenzie, the birthday girl, wanted cookie favors to go with her movie theme. I remembered seeing popcorn cookies that two of my favorite bloggers had created, Bridget of Bakeat350, and Meaghan of The Decorated Cookie, and I decided that was a perfect favor for a movie party.

The mini popcorn containers were purchased at a Party City store. I filled the container up about ¾ of the way with waxed paper. Each favor contained 25-30 popcorn cookies. I made up an entire batch of sugar cookie dough and got hundreds of popcorn pieces out of it. I discovered my mini flower cookie cutter would make great popcorn pieces. Once I cut out the cookies, I tweaked them a little (stretching out a little, taking off a petal or two, etc.) to make them look like random popcorn pieces and not perfect little flowers.

To ice them, I outlined them in white royal icing with a #2 Wilton tip. I flooded the cookie with white royal icing and icing tinted yellow with Wilton’s Golden Yellow gel. I know this may seem like a ton of work, but they went much faster than most of the sugar cookies I’ve made recently. With these, instead of trying to make them perfect, you’re actually trying to make them imperfect for the right effect.

We’re heading into cookie season and I’ve had a lot of people ask me for my sugar cookie recipe. It took me years of trying different recipes to find a sugar cookie that I loved. As far as taste goes, these are amazing. They are made with cream cheese, which keeps them soft and chewy, yet still strong enough to stand up to decorating and packaging. They are flavored with lemon extract. It doesn’t overpower the cookie, but adds an amazing taste.

Before you grab all of the ingredients, I have a few disclaimers. This dough can make you a bit crazy, if you don’t know what you’re up against. It is less stiff and more sticky than sugar cookie recipes I’ve tried in the past. I’ve stuck with it because I have found nothing that compares to the texture and flavor. There have been times when I’ve been tempted to go with a more sturdy dough, but over and over again people who have tried these say that they not only look cute, but they’ve never tasted a better sugar cookie.

Here’s are my tricks:

  • Do not use low-fat or fat-free cream cheese.
  • Make sure you cream the cream cheese and butter with the sugar before mixing in other ingredients.
  • Divide the dough up into three pieces, and cover each in saran wrap, and place all three in a Ziploc bag.
  • CHILL ~ These cookies have to chill out overnight. As soon as the dough you’re working with starts coming to room temperature, put it back in the fridge and start with another third.
  • Dust waxed paper and rolling pin with flour more liberally than you would with other sugar cookie recipes to avoid sticking.
  • Do not overcook. This is critical. If you take them out too soon, they’re doughy in the middle, too late and they are hard and slightly browned on the edges and bottom. When I think they’re ready I check a cookie by touching the top and seeing if it seems liquidy inside. It should still give a little when you touch the top. The second way I test them is to flip one of the cookies over. A cookie that is not fully cooked, looks as if there is moisture on the bottom. With a little practice, it’s easier to gauge when they’re done.

My Favorite Sugar Cookie Recipe

Have a great weekend everyone!
