CROWNS AND COSMOS PARTY

A term I’ve been using a lot these days is “Blogable.”  I attended a party recently that was so blogable I had to share it with all my gal pals.

Andrea, a former pageant holder of many crowns, sent out e-vites to girlfriends for her annual Crowns and Cosmos Party, with instructions to come dressed for a pageant.  She TIVO’d the Miss American Pageant Saturday night and on Sunday when we arrived for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres she greeted us with crowns and cocktails.

The party was hilarious.  Twelve girls arrived in formal gowns.  Some gowns were recent purchases from Good Will and others were old prom dresses or former bridesmaid dresses.  The most amazing dress was worn by Gloria – a yellow taffeta number with ruffles on the top and bottom, that she wore in a wedding 25 years ago.  She carried a flower embellished fan and a crown of artificial, 25 year old blue and yellow flowers.  She even brought the fake flower boutonniere her husband wore.

I wore a blue and silver sequin covered sheath.  The last thing my husband said to me when I walked out the door was, “Don’t get into an accident and for heaven’s sake don’t get pulled over by a cop!”

Before watching the TIVO’d pageant we showed off our talent and offered standard Miss America wishes for world peace, then made fun of the real contestants.

Andrea served the following recipe for the Skip and Go Naked cocktail.

3 1/2 cups cold beer (trust me – it sounds weird but it’s really good)

3 1/3 cups frozen pink lemonade concentrate

1 1/4 cups vodka

Blend and serve over ice.

If you want your Skip and Go Naked  to look like a pink frozen margarita, mix ingredients in a pitcher. Fill a blender halfway with mix and halfway with ice and blend.

One of my favorite horsd’oeuvres was the Crown of Brie.

Trim the yucky white top off a wheel of Brie cheese.

Mix 1/4 cup pecans, 1/4 cup brown sugar with 2 tablespoons of Brandy and sprinkle the mixture on top of the Brie.  Broil until the cheese is barely melted and serve with apple slices, crackers or thin slices of French bread.

INAUGURATION PARTY AND BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION

By now you probably know if there is an event there is a party.  Up front I admit I voted for John McCain.  If you read any of his books you realize he is an amazing man.  So with that said, like so many other Americans, I wish only the best for our new President.

This country has come a long way.  At the age of five my family drove from St. Louis to Daytona Beach, Florida.  We stopped at a filling station for gas and a drink of water and I’ll never forget turning on the water fountain marked “COLORED” and yelling out, “Hey, this is NOT colored water.”  That was my first taste of racism.

In honor of Martin Luther King’s Birthday on the 19th, President Obama’s Inauguration on the 20th, which is also the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln, and Black History Month, my party menu is a tribute to my personal favorites.

COCKTAILS:  Obamatini

Oprah Winefree (We all know she’s dieting again))

                     Maya Anjello Shooters

APPETIZER:  Martin Luther King Crab Cakes

SALAD:  Mean Joe Greens (I don’t actually know who he is but I couldn’t think of anyone else for salad.

BREAD:   Stevie Wonder Bread

VEGETABLE:  Condaleezza Rice

MAIN COURSE:  Tiger Woods Prawns

DESSERT:  Barry White Chocolate Mousse with Halle Berry Coulis

So get out the 4th of July martini glasses and the patriotic decorations and give a toast to the greatest country on the face of the earth and to our new president.  And then bring on the karoke.
