Cute as a Button Baby Shower Cookies and Cupcakes

If you read my blog, you probably know how badly I wanted a baby girl. I love and adore the boy and wouldn’t trade him for anything, but getting him to play Barbies or be excited to go to the mall with me just isn’t going to happen. Since the mall and Barbies are out, I do get excited to make girly cookies and cupcakes   Last week these were made to celebrate a newborn baby girl. Bridget at Bakeat350 made “cute as a button cookies” awhile back that I loved, and I thought the idea was a perfect one for this “Sip and See” party.

The only additional step with these cookies was making the fondant buttons. It was really pretty simple with Wilton’s pre-made fondant on hand. Bridget made the process even easier by posting a step by step photo tutorial on how to make them. The words were written on the royal icing using my new Americolor food writer markers. These markers are now my favorite of any of the food-safe markers I’ve tried. LOVE THEM!

I wanted the cupcakes to coordinate with the cookies, so I carried over the flower and button theme.  Don’t you just love how the buttons look in the center of the flowers… so adorable and girly I can hardly stand it.

Halloween Wrap-up & New Roomies

My new roommates moved in last Sunday, so it’s been quite a week. I never planned on having roommates. In fact, when I got divorced there was even a discussion about not having roommates in the best interest of our boy. For six years, I’ve kept good on that promise, and in doing so, our house has become the boy’s safe haven.

So I’ve broken a promise… sort of, but I really did find the best roommates possible. Roommates who cook dinner and do my laundry. Roommates who pick up my groceries and watch the boy when I need them to. They’re also roommates who plan on traveling the world and staying here in between vacations. Most importantly, the Naughty One approves, and is in fact in her glory with them here. Our roommates are named Grandma and Grandpa. My parents have given up their huge party house and are moving on to the next chapter in their lives, destination unknown. We are excited to be their home base when they need a break from traveling. They’re here for ten more days before heading out on a 30 day road trip.

Prior to the move-in, we hosted our annual pumpkin carving party. I’ve decided there are two types of food/party bloggers… those who pretend to have parties and blog about them, and those who actually do have parties, forget to take pictures at their parties, and when they actually remember to take pictures, the pictures turn out pretty crappy. I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather have a fabulous party with crappy pictures than vice-versa.

Wishing you all a fabulous week ahead. I’ll be back this week to share photos of the baking orders I somehow found time to  cram in during moving week.

Wedding Cake Cookie Favors and Birthday Cake Cookies

Sorry for my lapse in posting.  When I’m not posting, it’s almost always due to taking on cookie orders. I mean, don’t rule out the possibility that my absence is because I’ve driven miles and miles to see Prince Charming (of course that would have to mean he’s not “on call”), and please don’t ever rule out the fact that I could have become a 48 Hours Mystery episode (if ya know what I’m saying) … but more than likely, I’m in cookie mode.

The past week I spent working and making cookies (no drives to Prince Charming, and thankfully no 48 Hours episode material). The first cookies were for Juli’s wedding reception. She wanted me to do a monogram and her wedding colors were jewel tones (which I love for fall!!) . We decided on these wedding cake cookies with the initial of her newly married name in a deep purple. Just like the wedding dress cookies, we did each wedding cake cookie a little different. Congratulations Juli! I wish you all the best as you start your first year of marriage together.

The second batch of cookies were surprise cookies for my Big Sis. My sister’s birthday is on the 16th, the day before mine, so this was our birthday weekend. She turned 40 this year, and I’m just two years behind. As kids, we always celebrated birthdays together, but now distance makes that a bit challenging. My sister lives in Texas with her husband and daughter. My mom and dad flew out this weekend to surprise her. My niece told me, after seeing her grandparents, “Aunt Katie, I almost had a heart-attack!”. I think my sister was even more surprised than her daughter. I would have loved to have gone too, but sadly I had a training Friday until five that I couldn’t cancel. I wasn’t there to celebrate, but I did send along surprise birthday cookies! Happy Birthday to my Sis! Love You!

Ten Years After 9-11

The boy helped all of us get through the aftermath of 9-11. When we arrived in DC. the Pentagon had gold plaques of those who had been killed. The boy looked right at my Uncle Karl's plaque (see the middle picture, top row). This is one of my favorite pictures we've ever taken (and yes that is me holding the boy with hair way too dark ten years ago.)

I couldn’t let today end without posting, but in all honesty, I couldn’t wait for today to be over.  Many of you know that my Uncle Karl was killed in the Pentagon on 9-11. He was my dad’s older brother, and only sibling. It’s hard to believe it was ten years ago today that life changed so drastically for so many families. I try not to watch t.v. at all on 9-11. It’s kind of the same reason I won’t watch the video of giving birth to my son. Matt could never understand that. I lived those events. I remember all of it intensely. Life changing events are better as memories (if that makes any sense).

Blake was just over four months old on 9-11. I had been up all night with the boy who never had time to sleep. Sleeping would mean missing out on life, so I learned early on, this child would sleep as little as possible, so not to miss out on any of the fun (still holds true today). It took my sleep-deprived brain awhile to even comprehend what Matt was telling me… a plane had hit the Twin Towers. By the time I was actually up and functioning, we got word of the plane crashing into the Pentagon. My mom and my sister came and camped out at my house. My dad continued to work… to stop working would mean to think of the possibility of losing his brother. It was a few days before we found out that Uncle Karl had been killed. We held out hope until we knew. My parents flew out as soon as they could and spent a lot of time being briefed on what was known. When they arrived home, a package was on their doorstep… from my Uncle Karl. The morning of 9-11, before heading into the Pentagon, he sent a package to my dad. Strangely enough, the package included a CD that had funeral marches on it. My dad also received a book with a note in it from his brother. What an AWESOME gift to come home to. Hours before my uncle lost his life, he was thinking of his brother. It’s one of those things that is much more than a coincidence.

A few weeks later, services were arranged and we all flew out to DC. Blake was now five months, and I was absolutely terrified to put him on the plane. Back up a little while… when I found out I was pregnant, I was pretty shocked. The boy wasn’t planned per say. I had just been named Orange County Teacher of the Year, and my focus was entirely on my career. He was a great surprise, but I didn’t know how wonderful of a surprise until after 9-11. I’m not sure how we could have gotten through it without him. It’s hard to be anything but joyful when you have a happy baby smiling back at you. He was an incredible blessing, and since birth has absolutely adored his grandparents.

So tonight, I’m thinking of Uncle Karl, thinking of the loss my dad has had to cope with, and thinking of all of the other families who have been effected by 9-11. Nothing is ever certain. I feel so blessed to be a daughter to two amazing parents, a sister to one I have always looked up to, and a mom to a boy I love more than anything in this world!

M&M, Pretzel, Chocolate Chip Bars… No Mixed Emotions

The first day of school finally arrived… my boy started 5th grade today!

An interesting question was posed to me last week that I thought I’d share… brace yourself for this one ~ Here’s the question, “Are you ready to be pregnant again?”.  I know I’m not giving you the context of the question, which really isn’t fair, but regardless of the context, don’t you think that’s kind of an interesting question to ask a single parent of a ten-year-old, who is still in search of Prince Charming? Where do I even begin with that one? First off, being pregnant and having a baby are two entirely different questions. Here is my translation of , “Are you ready to be pregnant again?”. “Are you ready to give up Kendall Jackson for 40 weeks, gain a bunch of weight, and wear clothes that aren’t all that cute?”.  I’m gonna have to go with no for now based on my current circumstances.

I will tell you this though, when I sent the boy off to school I instantly flash-backed to his younger years… all of the hours we spent playing Thomas the Train together, his first day of kindergarten, and that cute, little boy face that used to kiss me goodnight after I would tell him,” I’m the luckiest mom in the world because I have you for a boy.” It really does go way too fast, and as much as we try to be in the moment, time always gets ahead of us, doesn’t it?

Blake’s dad came over for our traditional first day of school breakfast this morning. We’ve done this since kindergarten, and it holds a lot of significance. For me, it marks another year that we’ve continued to keep our family (which happens to have two separate homes) a whole family unit. (The truth of the matter is that Matt and I are both really selfish people and neither of us want to miss out on anything important our son goes through. I’m kidding, sort of!) I hope that as Blake grows up and figures things out, he will understand that we loved him so much, we were willing to do whatever it took to remain a family.

So today was filled with mixed emotions for me. I’m exhausted!! But you know what I have absolutely no mixed emotions about, these cookie bars. I found this recipe from Baker Girl, a blog I just discovered. You must check out all of Kerry’s recipes, so much sweet inspiration in her archives! These bars were good right out of the oven, but fantastic the next day. Don’t eat them all up in one day and you’ll see what I mean. It is the combination of chocolate and pretzels and cookie dough that make these fabulous. I baked mine for thirty minutes. Next time I might bake a few extra minutes just to get them a tad more firm in the center. They will firm up a bit overnight though.

Surfboard Cookies & More Wedding Dress Cookie Favors

Be careful what you wish for… that whole thing about being excited to get back to work and routine last week, what was I thinking? Clearly, a moment of insanity. The boy has a few more weeks of summer, but I’m back training teachers and sitting through all-day trainings. Thank goodness for friends and family who are willing to keep the boy entertained while I’m gone. In addition to being back to my “real” job, I’ve also taken on a bunch of orders, completely self-inflicted pain so don’t feel bad for me. The cookie orders are actually a stress-reliever when I don’t over-book myself. I was thrilled to do these two orders this past week.

The first order was for my girlfriend, Nicole’s, daughter’s 10th birthday. These were my gift to, Kirsten, the birthday girl. I adore this child. If I had a girl, this is what I would hope for. She is such a sweet girl, plus she loves my cookies and cupcakes and makes me feel like I’m some celebrity chef. She really wants me to try out for Cupcake Wars, and asked me if I would be the official judge at the cupcake decorating contest at her birthday party. How can you say no to that? Her birthday was held at the beach club near our house and her theme was surfboards. The surfboard cookies were fun to make. We kept the same color scheme, but made each one a different design. The birthday girl and her guests enjoyed them!

The second order was for more wedding dress cookies. Every wedding shower order I have done this year has been for these wedding dress cookies. Like the surfboards, I like each cookie to be a little different. Here are a few of my creations below. Andrea, another girlfriend is hosting a bridal shower for her friend Juli this weekend. The theme is “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. Don’t you love that? Tiffany blue happens to be my favorite color, so I’m in love with this shower. I’m also doing the cupcakes for the shower over the weekend, so I’ll share photos next week.

Happy Birthday Kirsten!

Congratulations Juli on your upcoming wedding!

Congratulations to Andrea for making it through another bridal shower! How many does this make this year?I know it’s in the double digits.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Wiener Nationals: Part 2

Here are a few more photos of this weekend. Winnie’s fan club took home Winnie the wiener dog cookie favors Saturday night. The cookies were a hit with the kids!

The Orange County Register put together a short video from the races. The pup and I made the final cut, and so did my cookies. Click here to see it.

Cars 2 Cookies… Lightning McQueen & Mater

We have an exciting weekend ahead. I was invited to attend a special media screening of Cars 2. The occasion calls for cookies, don’t you think? The screening is going to take place at a brand new UltraLuxe theatre at Anaheim GardenWalk, near Disneyland. Now this isn’t your ordinary movie theater. It is the only theater in Orange County that has D-Box motion seats. The seats are programmed to move in sync with the action in the movie you’re watching. How cool is that? The movie theater, of course, has the state of the art movie screens, but you probably expected that. Here’s what you might not expect… paninis, salads, quesadillas, desserts, and fancy coffees. All of these gourmet options can be found in the theater’s café. This is going to be a movie experience like no other!

I set out to make Cars cookies for the event and was so relieved to discover William’s Sonoma’s Cars 2 cookie cutter set. The cookies have impressions to make decorating much easier. The key word being “easier”. These were not easy at all. I was making them dreading, I mean wondering how many cookie requests for Cars themed birthdays I’m going to get. There is a lot of detail involved, which is why I only made Lightning McQueen and Mater,(just two of the four cookie cutters in the set. I wrapped up a red tin filled with cookies for the event organizer, a yummy, little thank you for the opportunity.

The left-over cookies are for friends. Almost every child so far has picked a Lightning McQueen cookie. Poor little Maters… he’s just not as cool, I guess.

Have a great weekend everyone!
