I recently saw beautiful hydrangea cupcakes on Glorious Treats, and was in awe of their beauty. I couldn’t wait to try making them, but decided I’d wait for the perfect occasion to present itself.
What is it about hydrangeas, they’re such happy flowers ~ no thorns to contend with like roses, and not too delicate like tulips. Hydrangeas are simple, yet elegant enough to stand alone.
Shortly after seeing this cupcake idea, my mom mentioned a party she was having… a pretend wedding party. For real! Sounds strange? (then you haven’t met my parents) They’ll find any reason for a party. My dad had planned on officiating my cousin’s wedding in St. Louis, and my mom thought a trial run was in order. Even a pretend wedding requires an elegant dessert, and my mom thought these cupcakes were the perfect choice. I sent them along with my silver chandelier cake stand, and told my parents to give my best to the pretend bride and groom.
The next day when I asked how it went, I was told that there was one too many toasts given at the pretend wedding, which made the officiante unable to practice the ceremony. My advice… schedule the pretend reception after the pretend ceremony next time. The actual wedding took place last weekend. I was unable to attend, but heard it was absolutely beautiful, and that the officiante did a fabulous job. The toasts must have been scheduled after the ceremony. Congratulations to Nick & Meghan! Wishing you many years of happiness!
Here’s a youtube tutorial by SeriousCakes that shows a little different technique to make hydrangea cupcakes. It’s worth watching if you’re thinking of making these. I added Wilton’s white sugar pearls to the inside of each flower for a little added elegance. Pink or blue hydrangea cupcakes would be great for a fancy baby shower.
Have a great week everyone!

What a funny story. : )
The cupcakes are beautiful. Hydrangeas remind me of the beach town we vacation in every year and I just love them. You brought them to life in a delicious way.

Do you remember the pretend wedding at church camp when we were kids? I think Dave Canfield was my hubby then.

We missed you too Katie! Your dad was amazing…and of course…made all of us cry! The toasts were plentiful. As if you wouldn’t have guessed….knowing our family!
Too bad the cupcakes didn’t find their way to the wedding! They would have been a tremendous hit – considering they were their flowers!!…!!!
Missing you!
